Shaw edges Ebert in Mod thriller at I-94

By Ray Beste

Fergus Falls, MN (August 24th, 2018) – WISSOTA Late Model standout Don Shaw joined the winner’s list in the WISSOTA Modified division leading all 20 laps of the division’s headliner Friday night at I-94 Speedway. Wahpeton, ND driver Casey Meyer scored his second WISSOTA Late Model feature win of the season while Brock Gronwold reigned victorious in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified finale. Kyle Dykhoff (WISSOTA Street Stocks), Travis Saurer (Limited Late Models) and Daniel Harstad (Short Trackers) each took top honors as well during a wild night at the high banked 3/8-mile oval.

Brandon Fah and Cory Dykhoff shared the front row starting duties for the 15-lap WISSOTA Street Stock A-main. Dykhoff beat Fah to turn one and was scored the leader at the end of the first lap. Dykhoff would continue to lead on lap three when he was joined at the front by his brother Kyle. Kyle, who started fifth, was able to work the bottom side of the speedway while most of his competitors were up top on the cushion. The remaining 12 laps featured a great back and fourth battle between the brothers, Dykhoff. With six to go, Kyle fired to the inside of Cory entering turn three. The back end came around on the #11 but Kyle was able to save it while Cory once again stretched his lead. Seventh starter Shawn Koranda looked very strong from the get go as he pressured the back side of Kyle for the second spot. With just two markers left on the board, Cory bobbled just a bit in turn four which allowed Kyle to race by. Cory would remain on the back side of Kyle during the final two circuits, but it wasn’t enough to claim the victory. In the end it was Kyle edging Cory in a good at Fergus. Koranda, Ryan Satter and Tim Johnson rounded out the top five running order for the WISSOTA Street Stocks, who drew 14 entries.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modified A-main proved to be a bit of a marathon with fifth starter Haley Lee taking the early advantage. Lee, who started fifth, got to the front right from the start and showed the way for the first 15 laps. The race was slowed several times which made it tough for the drivers to find any kind of rhythm. With five laps remaining second place running Zach Benson fired a slider to the inside of Lee entering turn three. Benson didn’t quit have Lee cleared and his right rear contacted Lee’s left front sending her up the track on two wheels. Benson was charged with the caution and unfortunately Lee’s night ended. When the dust settled Jeff Nelson was now the leader with just three laps remaining. Nelson brought the field back to green with Brock Gronwold in second. As the field entered turn one, Gronwold climbed the ladder using the extreme top side to dispose of Nelson off turn two. Nelson, however, rebounded and drew even with Gronwold through turns three and four. The final two laps, however, were all Gronwold who went on to score the victory. A victory that is more impressive when you realize Gronwold pitted for a flat tire and went to the back with eight laps remaining. Nelson, 14thstarter Ron Saurer, Brandon Dolman and 21ststarter Sam Zender rounded out the top five.

The Limited Late Model A-main was dominated start to finish by Clara City, MN driver Dustin Bluhm. Bluhm, who started third, got out front early on and was never seriously challenged outside of a failed restart with four laps remaining. The race was called near it’s end after a scary wreck involving Rick Nelson in turn one. Nelson was alright but I’m sure will be sore for a few days in the future. The victory appeared to Bluhm’s first ever at I-94 but he was disqualified after in post-race technical inspection. That meant the win was taken by Travis Saurer. Ben Wolden, Ryan Satter, Rick Nelson and Dustin Johanneck all finished inside the top five as well. Heat race wins went to Bluhm and Wolden.

The WISSOTA Modified finale proved to be a dandy with Jake Wildman and Don Shaw showing the 23-car field to the green. Shaw beat Wildman to turn one and took the lead as the field filed off turn two. Corky Thomas joined Wildman in a battle for second while Shaw began to stretch his advantage out front. As the race wore on it was more than apparent that the #60 of Dan Ebert was going to be a factor. The veteran out of Lakeshore used a bevy of moves to work by his fellow competitors finding himself in second behind Shaw with five laps still up on the board. Shaw was forced to negotiate some lapped cars which allowed Ebert to close the gap. On the final trip around Shaw would split two lap cars in turns three and four. While Shaw washed up the hill after his split move, Ebert diamond the corner and pulled even with Shaw in turn four. As the duo drag raced back to the line it was Shaw using his top side momentum to edge Ebert in a thriller. Travis Saurer would finish third with Brady Gerdes fourth and Wildman fifth.

The WISSOTA Late Model A-main was dominated by Wahpeton, ND driver Meyer. Meyer, who started third, made his move for the lead on lap four moving by Cory Tammen for the point. Eighth starter Don Shaw would charge from eighth to second. With four laps remaining the only caution flag of the event waved which put Shaw and Tammen right on the rear bumper of Meyer for the restart. Meyer, however, was the class of the field and once again stretched his lead when the cars went back to green. In the end it was all Meyer taking home his second I-94 Speedway WISSOTA Late Model win of the season. Shaw, Cole Schill, Shawn Meyer and Tammen were all members of the top five.

For the second time this season it was Harstad taking top honors in the Short Tracker A-main. Harstad started third but wasted little time grabbing the early advantage. From there on out it was all Harstad taking the win in dominating fashion. Matt Pederson, 10thstarter Cory Kramer, Zach Kort and Michelle Lund all turned in top five performances as well for the Short Trackers who drew 14 competitors.
